Harrisburg Magazine Feature, Recent Award

B. Passeri Warfel was one of four artists featured in a Harrisburg Magazine article on artists and their work spaces.

A self-described portrait specialist, Barbara Passeri-Warfel is just as comfortable creating beautiful still-life compositions with fruits from her garden. A graduate of Rowan University, Warfel now experiments with techniques in oils and glazes that allow her to be "...More innovative with ideas. I don't work from a defined concept...I let the piece take me where it will." Most recently, that verve brought her to this year's Harrisburg Symphony Showhouse, where her art was showcased in the Garret Bedroom. She was recently honored with a 2006 Spectrum Award for Excellence in the Arts for her teaching of art education programs for senior adults in assisted living who want to learn more about art. "Art is about a 'living experience,'" Warfel says. "Sharing my love of it is a joy."

About the room:
The room has good light coming in from windows facing north and west.
I’ll stay here.

The room represented the “living experience” of an artist whose work is created within the loft's four walls. Paintings, drawings, art books, art magazines, masks, old family heirlooms, colored vases – objects which attract her eye were placed and waiting to inspire the work. Furniture was an eclectic mix of painted metal and wood reflecting the artist’s austere circumstances, yet the room was rich with the color and the shapes of her artistic sensibility.

Shades of cadmium red light accents were placed to carry the viewer’s eye around the room, like accents in a painting to enhance its composition. The room contained a single metal bed with an old hand-quilted coverlet and homespun sheet, a small bed stand, a chair, bookcase, fabrics for use as drape in still life paintings, canvases, tubes of paint on a work table, colored pencils, and frames leaning in a corner. Her own drawings and paintings were everywhere on the walls. On an easel sat her current work in progress, a partially completed painting of a still life set-up, arranged in the window of her room.
