"There is a huge need for art activity for our aging
population. Yet, few good resource materials are available for caregivers.
The goal of the recently published manual, “Simple Lines Make a
Difference”, is to share the author's knowledge and experience with
caregivers. This guide is designed for individuals with no art training to
use with a senior population that has no art background. Everything one
needs to understand, say, and do is provided. Chapters include easy to
understand and implement instructions, such as lesson organization,
materials, and instructional methods, along with thirteen specific art
activities.
“I Can’t Believe I Did That!” Quoting seniors who view their finished artwork on display, proudly smiling. Art activity helps seniors residing in assisted living facilities, including victims of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease, to regain self-esteem and reduce depression. Creative thought originates in the parietal lobe of the brain, which is not affected until the late stages of the disease. Therefore, creative art activities bypass areas of limitations and go to areas of strength. It further increases cognitive skills, concentration, fine motor skills, and promotes social interaction. Author Since 1998, Barbara Passeri-Warfel has provided art instruction for seniors at more than eighteen sites including senior centers, HUD apartment buildings for low income elderly, adult daycare centers, and numerous assisted living facilities. In 2006 she was honored to receive the Spectrum Award for Excellence in the Arts for work with the elderly. "It is my belief, based on thirteen years of experience working with seniors, that much of what is intuitive and ingrained in a personality remains intact and visible when given an opportunity for expression through meaningful creative art activity".
